If you are a foreign citizen and you are a family member of a European Union (EU) citizen, the Community Family Card is the easiest and fastest way to obtain a residence permit in Spain.

What is the Community Family Card?

The Community Family Residence Card is aimed at those family members of EU citizens, or of another State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area or Switzerland, who do not hold the nationality of one of these States, and decide to reside in Spain for a period of more than 90 days.

Apply for the Community Family Card. Who can apply?

You can apply for the Community Family Card if you are in one of the following situations:

• If you are the spouse or registered partner of the EU citizen.
• If you are a direct descendant under 21 years of age of the EU citizen or a foreigner, older and living in the care of the EU citizen or incapacitated.
• If you are a direct ascendant of the EU citizen, and of his or her spouse or registered partner who lives in his or her care.
• If you are a family member who in the country of origin would have been in the care of the EU citizen.

What are the requirements to apply for it?

• Accompany or join the EU citizen EU.
• Family ties: you must prove the existence of your family ties with the EU citizen (marriage certificate or registration as a de facto partner, birth certificate).

I want to apply for the Community Family Card, What are the steps to follow?

The application process for the Community Family Card can be carried out directly in Spain online. Once the necessary documents have been collected, the process consists of 3 steps:

1. Submission of the application: with all the necessary documents, the application is made online, within the period of 3 months from the date of entry into Spain.
2. Taking fingerprints: once the residence permit has been granted, it is necessary to request an appointment at the police station to have your fingerprints taken.
3. Collecting the Foreigner Identity Card (TIE): 40 days after having attended the appointment for taking fingerprints, the TIE will be made available for the applicant to collect in person.

What documents do I need to apply for the EU Family Card?

    • Registration with the Census of Economic Activities.
    • Proof that your establishment is registered in the Commercial Registry.
    • Document of registration in Social Security or consent to check the data in the files of the General Treasury of Social Security or the Tax Agency.
  • o Citizen without work activity:
    • Proof of public or private health insurance that covers the foreign citizen.
    • Proof of having sufficient economic resources for himself and his family members during the period of residence in Spain.

    • Enrollment in an educational center, recognized or financed by the educational administration.
