APPLY FOR LONG-TERM RESIDENCE PERMIT AND LONG-TERM EU PERMIT

A long-term residence permit is a document that allows a foreigner to live and work indefinitely in Spain under the same conditions as Spanish citizens.

I am going to apply for a long-term residence permit. What are the requirements that must be met?

  • Legal and continuous residence: You must have resided legally and continuously in Spain for at least 5 years. Absences for justified reasons are counted, but the absence limits must not be exceeded
  • EU Blue Card holder: If you have been a holder of an EU Blue Card in another European Union country for at least 5 years, with the last two years in Spain, you may also be eligible for this authorisation.

  • Residence and birth in Spain: If you were born in Spain and have legally and continuously resided here for the last 3 years after turning 18, you can also apply for this authorisation.
  • Loss of Spanish nationality: If you were Spanish by origin and have lost Spanish nationality, you can apply for this authorisation.
  • Guardianship of a public entity: If you have been under the guardianship of a Spanish public entity for the last 5 years before turning 18, you may be eligible for this authorisation. eligible.
  • Stateless, refugee or beneficiary of protection: If you are in Spain and have obtained recognition of stateless, refugee or beneficiary of protection status, you can apply for this authorization.
  • Notable contribution to the progress of Spain: In some cases, it is also possible to obtain the long-term residence permit for having contributed in a notable way to the economic, scientific or cultural progress of Spain, or to its projection abroad.

Other necessary requirements

In addition to meeting these specific requirements, you must also meet the general requirements to obtain a residence permit in Spain,

  • Not be a citizen of the European Union.
  • Not be in an irregular situation in Spain.
  • Not have a criminal record in Spain.
  • Not be prohibited from entering Spain.
  • Not being within the period of commitment not to return if you have opted for voluntary return from your country of origin.

Required documents

When submitting your application for a long-term residence permit, you must provide the following documents:

  • - Official form EX11
  • - Complete copy of your passport or travel document.
  • - If you reside in Spain, you must present a report issued by the regional authorities, the competent authorities, or the educational center certifying the schooling of minors in your care who are of compulsory school age.
  • - If you do not reside in Spain, a criminal record certificate issued by the authorities of your country of origin or of the countries in which you have resided during the last five years.
  • - Depending on your situation:
    • o If you have resided in the EU for five consecutive years as the holder of a the EU Blue Card, and the two years immediately prior to the application you have lived in Spanish territory: You must present documentation that proves the periods of previous residence as a holder of the EU Blue Card in another State of the European Union.
    • o If you are in one of the following situations:
      • You are a resident, you were born in Spain, and upon reaching the age of majority you have resided in Spain legally and continuously for at least the three consecutive years prior to the application.
      • You were Spanish by origin and lost Spanish nationality.

In both cases, you must present the birth certificate.

For the case of a long-term residence permit-EU you will need to provide:

  • Official form EX11
  • Complete copy of the passport or travel document
  • If applicable, documents that justify periods of previous residence as a holder of a Blue Card-EU in other Member States of the European Union.
  • Documentation proving financial resources for you and your family
  • Health insurance.

If you are in Spain, you can submit your application in person or through a representative, at any public registry addressed to the Immigration Office of the province in which you reside.

If you are not in Spanish territory but you are in Spanish territory, you must do so at the Immigration Office of the province in which you have established your domicile.

If you are not in Spain and do not reside here, you must do so at the Spanish consular office in the country in which you are located.
