Non-lucrative residence is a type of residence permit aimed at people who are not EU citizens and who have sufficient resources to live in Spain without needing to work or carry out commercial activities.
This type of visa will allow you to move freely through the countries of the Schengen Agreement and is ideal for those whose main source of income is passive.
You can also renew your residence permit for five years, after which you can opt for permanent residence.
You can also apply for Spanish nationality once you have met the residence periods established by law.
Your immediate family members can obtain a residence permit if you prove that you have sufficient resources for their support.
If after a period as a resident you would like to have the possibility of working in Spain, you can do so by presenting an employment contract.
The permit will allow you to study in Spain, and even be able to access paid university internships as these have a purely educational nature and therefore are not of a work nature.
It is not suitable for those who wish to work remotely from Spain, for which there is the visa for Digital Nomads.
The required economic means are determined by the Spanish government and are equivalent to 400% of the monthly IPREM (Public Indicator of Income for Multiple Effects), an index used for the granting of financial aid, which includes scholarships, subsidies, unemployment benefits and minimum interprofessional wage.
In 2024, the IPREM is 600 euros, which means that the minimum income required to obtain a non-lucrative visa is 2,400 euros ($2,619.12) per month, with an additional 600 euros ($654.78) for each dependent. This income can also be demonstrated through an annual income or savings, in which case the required amount would be 28,800 euros (31,450 dollars) for the main applicant and 8,400 euros (9,134.75 dollars) for each dependent.
In any case, it is not necessary to make any investment to obtain this non-lucrative residence permit.
Once the permit has been granted, you have a period of 3 months to enter Spanish territory. Likewise, once you have entered the country, you have 1 month to process the TIE at the corresponding police station.
