APPLY FOR STUDY VISA

This is the most requested visa by foreign citizens who want to study in Spain, as it will allow you to remain in Spanish territory for a period of more than 90 days, to carry out or expand your studies in authorized educational centers.

Types of stay for studies

The study visa will not be granted for those training courses that have a duration of less than 90 days.

For those who do exceed this, we find 2 types of visa:

  • Short-term: for studies between 91 and 180 days. In this case, it is not mandatory to process your physical card or TIE.
  • Long-term: for studies between 91 and 180 days. In this case, it is not mandatory to process your physical card or TIE.
  • Long-term: for studies between 91 and 180 days. duration: more than 181 days with the issuance of the TIE.

What are the requirements for a study stay?

The requirements to access a study stay permit are the following:

  • Not being an EU citizen or being in Spain in an irregular situation.
  • Economic income: It must be sufficient to cover expenses during your entire stay and that of your family.
  • Private health insurance: which must be without waiting periods or co-payments.
  • Admission to an authorized study center in Spain: to carry out a full-time program with which you can obtain a degree or certificate of studies.
  • The training course must be in person: studies are not allowed distance.
  • Certificate of negative criminal record: for studies longer than 180 days.
  • Medical certificate: for studies longer than 180 days and that prove that you do not suffer from serious illnesses that may affect public health.

I want to apply for a study visa, how do I do it?

  1. Application made from outside Spain:

In this case, you must make an appointment at the corresponding Spanish Consulate to apply for a Study Residence visa.

The resolution must be notified within a maximum period of one month from the day following the submission of the application. If you do not receive a response within this period, it will be considered to have been rejected due to administrative silence.

Once the visa has been granted, you must collect it within two months of notification. If it is not collected within this period, it will be understood that you have renounced the visa and the procedure will be archived.

Upon arrival in Spain, if your Authorization to Stay for Studies has a duration of more than 6 months, you must request your physical Card at the corresponding Police Station.

  1. Application made from Spain

Currently, you can submit the application for an Authorization to Stay for Studies online. To do this, you will need a Digital Certificate to complete the process through the Mercurio platform.

After submitting the application, either online through Mercurio or in person, you will receive an application receipt.

The application must be submitted when you have at least 30 days of legal stay left, otherwise it will be rejected.

Once the Immigration Office receives your application, it has a legal period of 3 months to process it and issue a resolution. If you do not receive any news within this period, the application will be considered to have been rejected due to administrative silence.

I am going to apply for a study permit, where do I start?

The important thing is that you can gather the necessary documentation to submit your application. Like this:

  • - Valid passport or travel document, valid for at least the period for which the stay is requested.
  • - If you apply from Spain, you must submit form EX00 30 days before the end of your stay as a tourist.
  • - Proof that you are enrolled or registered in an educational center.
  • - Documentation that proves compliance with the above requirements, including:
    • Responsible declaration.
    • Sufficient financial means: bank certificate, bank statements, subsidies, grants, scholarships, etc.
    • Medical insurance.
  • - If your stay is longer than 6 months, you must provide:
    • A medical certificate confirming the absence of serious illnesses with repercussions on public health, according to the International Health Regulations 2005.
    • If you are of legal age, a criminal record certificate issued by the authorities of your country of origin or the country in which you have resided for the last five years.

Keep in mind that all documentation obtained outside of Spain must be apostilled or legalized. Furthermore, if it is not in Spanish, it must be translated by a sworn translator authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.

Duration of the study permit

The maximum duration of your stay will be 1 year, extendable to 2 years when the study program is carried out at an authorized higher education institution.

Likewise, you may extend your study permit provided that you prove that you meet the requirements, continue to pursue related studies and have successfully passed the previous ones.

The extension must be requested within 60 calendar days prior to the expiration date of the authorization. It may also be submitted within the following 90 calendar days, without prejudice to any disciplinary procedure by the administration.
