This is the most requested visa by foreign citizens who want to study in Spain, as it will allow you to remain in Spanish territory for a period of more than 90 days, to carry out or expand your studies in authorized educational centers.
Types of stay for studies
The study visa will not be granted for those training courses that have a duration of less than 90 days.
For those who do exceed this, we find 2 types of visa:
The requirements to access a study stay permit are the following:
In this case, you must make an appointment at the corresponding Spanish Consulate to apply for a Study Residence visa.
The resolution must be notified within a maximum period of one month from the day following the submission of the application. If you do not receive a response within this period, it will be considered to have been rejected due to administrative silence.
Once the visa has been granted, you must collect it within two months of notification. If it is not collected within this period, it will be understood that you have renounced the visa and the procedure will be archived.
Upon arrival in Spain, if your Authorization to Stay for Studies has a duration of more than 6 months, you must request your physical Card at the corresponding Police Station.
Currently, you can submit the application for an Authorization to Stay for Studies online. To do this, you will need a Digital Certificate to complete the process through the Mercurio platform.
After submitting the application, either online through Mercurio or in person, you will receive an application receipt.
The application must be submitted when you have at least 30 days of legal stay left, otherwise it will be rejected.
Once the Immigration Office receives your application, it has a legal period of 3 months to process it and issue a resolution. If you do not receive any news within this period, the application will be considered to have been rejected due to administrative silence.
The important thing is that you can gather the necessary documentation to submit your application. Like this:
Keep in mind that all documentation obtained outside of Spain must be apostilled or legalized. Furthermore, if it is not in Spanish, it must be translated by a sworn translator authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.
Duration of the study permit
The maximum duration of your stay will be 1 year, extendable to 2 years when the study program is carried out at an authorized higher education institution.
Likewise, you may extend your study permit provided that you prove that you meet the requirements, continue to pursue related studies and have successfully passed the previous ones.
The extension must be requested within 60 calendar days prior to the expiration date of the authorization. It may also be submitted within the following 90 calendar days, without prejudice to any disciplinary procedure by the administration.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
It is a quick and easy procedure, with a resolution of between 20 and 30 days.
Yes, your relatives can also come with you, having requested the corresponding residence visas for them. The relatives who can come with you are your spouse or common-law partner, children under eighteen years of age or those who have a disability. In this case, you must prove that you have sufficient financial means to support yourself and your family. Keep in mind that student relatives cannot, under any circumstances, obtain authorization to carry out profit-making activities.
The means to prove my financial solvency can be from my own source, from my family, or through a scholarship. You must present the last three bank statements (cards), stamped by the bank, which show the movements and detailed transactions of the applicant's account, as well as the balance you have in the account.
Yes, you will have the possibility of working up to a maximum of 30 hours a week, as long as your schedule does not coincide with your training hours. The contract must be formalized in writing and be part-time. If it is full-time, its duration must not exceed three months or coincide with the periods in which the studies are carried out.
We emphasize that the main authorization in Spain is the one for study stay and not the one for work.
Yes, you can change your residence permit to a residence and work permit within 60 days before the card expires or within 90 days after your study permit expires. Please note that this can only be done with an employment contract that is related to the studies you completed (i.e. if you completed vocational training in physical education, the employment contract must be in this field and not, for example, in catering).
